Our Summer Intern Spotlight series continues with another inspiring member of our internship team. In this edition, you’ll get to know Mia Giantonio, another one of our talented interns as she shares more about her background, interests, and the experiences that have shaped her path.
My name is Mia Giantonio, and I’m currently a rising sophomore at Connecticut State Community College (Tunxis Campus), majoring in general studies and will be switching to a Health Information Technology next year with an expected graduation year of 2029. I am not currently involved in any clubs on campus. However, I am looking forward to finding clubs where I can discover community, leadership opportunities, and a chance to explore interests beyond the classroom.
I am a motivated student with strong organizational, communication, and research abilities aspiring to be a medical records specialist in the future. Professionally, I’m particularly interested in work within the field of healthcare, especially roles that allow me to contribute to efforts that improve accessibility to inclusive telehealth services, emphasizing the critical role of accessibility in modern healthcare delivery and bring my past experience closer to being able to practice it in a professional medical field environment.
That’s exactly why I chose this internship. I wanted to establish some foundational experience in the healthcare field to help me prepare for my future medical career. I’m hoping to gain a better understanding of accessibility barriers, particularly individuals with disabilities face when seeking care. I’m especially excited to grow my skills in research, organization, technology, and community outreach.
Outside of school and work, I love hanging out with friends and family, watching sports (Typically my high school basketball and volleyball team – I went to Bristol Central and graduated in 2024. I also like to watch the University Of Connecticut’s Men’s/Women’s basketball team), playing board/trivia games, and playing basketball plus two-person volleyball in my front yard. A fun fact about me is that I do a virtual karate class and another one is that I love dogs!
Accessibility, healthcare, and disability advocacy have become extremely important to me. I need things to be accessible to me because I have low vision and cannot see everything clearly. Healthcare is significantly interesting to me because I have had so many experiences where I needed medical attention so I thought that it might be a good idea for me to do something in the medical field but around the area of clerical work. Lastly, disability advocacy has had a huge impact on my life. It took me some time to learn how to advocate for myself and my accommodations, but now I can do it perfectly on my own!
What excites me most about the future is the chance to have a career in the medical field. This internship feels like a meaningful step toward being a medical records specialist.. I’m grateful for the opportunity, eager to learn from everyone here, and excited to bring my knowledge, experience, and passion for inclusive work to the team.
